Kurt Bier decided not to pass the offices of the Working People’s Law Center during a bicycle ride around the Echo Park district a few years back—and the next thing he knew he had passed the California Bar exam. It’s not quite that simple—Bier studied part-time at the People’s Law College in the Westlake district for several years, and he also benefited from the tutelage of Art Goldberg (see related Commentary, home page). Indeed, Bier got off his bike that day several years ago, went up to Goldberg’s second-floor offices on Echo Park Avenue, and landed a job that helped him prepare for his new career.
