Jessica Morillo is a familiar face to many in the Echo Park district northwest of Downtown. She looks after things at the laundromat located at the corner of Echo Park Avenue and Montana Street, where a lot of folks go to clean their clothes and check in on what’s happening around the neighborhood. Murillo came to the U.S. as a young girl from Anahuac in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, near the border with Texas. She labored as a farm worker in the Central Valley before arriving in Los Angeles in 1960. She has had a number of jobs here, working everywhere from manufacturing plants to Union Station. Morillo says she enjoys her most recent duties at the laundromat, where she works to keep the place neat and the machines properly maintained. Those efforts have helped make the place more social, she says, with customers able to relax and engage in conversations while the washing machines and dryers do their work.
