David Zahniser and Mariel Garza are both residents of the Echo Park district northwest of Downtown, where they recently volunteered for duty at the annual Lotus Festival, an Asian-themed cultural event (see related photo & caption, left). Zahniser put his extensive knowledge of Echo Park’s landscape and history to use as a guide on a bus tour for visitors to the festival. Garza pitched in by greeting folks at an information booth for the Echo Park Historical Society. The Lotus Festival managed to offer plenty of fun for visitors during its July 12-13 run, even though the famed lotus flowers in Echo Park Lake have all but disappeared lately. It took a true community effort to overcome the loss of the festival’s headliner, and the Garment & Citizen congratulates Zahniser, Garza, and the many other volunteers who answered the call (see related Dot Dot Dish item “Maitre D’,” home page).
