Maria Mendez is happy to be working at the new Save A Lot grocery store in the Echo Park district northwest of Downtown. One reason is because the native of Oaxaca, Mexico, lives within walking distance of the store, which opened a few months ago next to the Walgreens at Echo Park Avenue and Sunset Boulevard. Save A Lot offers plenty of bargains on everything from meats to produce to household items for shoppers, who appear to like the stock of merchandise as well as the store’s brightly decorated, well-lit interior. Mendez says she liked the place well enough to leave her prior job at the Warehouse Shoe Sale store a few blocks down Sunset for her position as a cashier at Save A Lot. So far, so good—for Mendez and Save A Lot. The store is currently working to install a main sign over its front door, and plans to have an official grand opening sometime in coming weeks.
