Here’s a fellow who won’t look directly into the camera, but it’s not because he’s shy. Nicolas Nacara gets paid to keep an eye out for any dangers as the security guard for Sarah’s Jewelry at 748 S. Broadway, so he can’t get caught up in a pose. Nacara came to Los Angeles from Toluca, Mexico, to seek opportunities for work, and found his job at the jewelry store 10 years ago. Nacara says he likes the job because it helps support his family, including his wife, Isabel, and the couple’s three children. He adds that he enjoys the customers who come to the store, as well as the many other folks who work in the neighborhood. Nacara also singles out his boss, Nasser, the longtime owner of Sarah’s Jewelry, as a bright spot. The Garment & Citizen congratulates Nacara and Nasser on their long association, which is one of the many personal stories that make Broadway a special place for merchants, workers, and shoppers.
