Happy for the Holidays: Children from Para Los Niños, a non-profit social service provider that operates childcare, pre-school and other programs at various locations in and around Downtown, take a look at the Christmas tree they helped create for display in the plaza of the Nokia Theater near the Staples Center. The children worked with Michael Amescua, Alex Rodriguez, Myrna Cristerna, and Edward Escamilla—all volunteers from Inner-City Arts, another non-profit group—to make and decorate the 25-foot tree. The tree is made from metal panels shaped as cones, and the children helped create the decorations from recycled aluminum, plastic, and cardboard. Staples Center owner AEG, which is also developing the adjacent L.A. Live! Entertainment District, sponsored the project. Gisselle Acevedo, president and chief executive officer of Para Los Niños, said the project gave the children valuable time with talented artists, and helped reinforce the organization’s emphasis on blending art and science to teach how things are made and what effects they have on individuals and the environment..
